Breast Reduction Jacksonville

Breast reduction (mammaplasty), is a procedure some women may choose for a variety of reasons. As the name implies, breast reduction reduces excess breast tissue and skin, making breasts more proportional to the rest of your body. The areolas may also be reduced and repositioned, as well. Breast reduction can be performed at any age, although waiting until breast development has stopped is usually recommended. Childbirth and breast-feeding may affect the size and shape of your breasts. If you plan to breast-feed in the future, you should discuss this with Dr. Doolabh.

You might be a good candidate for breast reduction if you have any of the following:

  • back, neck, or shoulder pain caused by the weight of your breasts
  • heavy, sagging breasts with very low nipples
  • breasts that are too large in proportion to your body frame
  • skin irritation beneath the breasts
  • indentations in your shoulders caused by tight bra straps
  • restriction of physical activity due to the size and weight of your breasts
  • feelings of consciousness about the large size of your breasts
  • one breast that is much larger than the other

There are different methods for breast reduction and the one recommended for you will be determined by your particular anatomy and desired results.

The most common method uses a two-part incision. One is made around the areola. Another runs vertically from the lower edge of the areola to the crease beneath the breast. In very large breasts, a separate, third incision beneath the breast that follows the natural curve of the breast crease may be also required.

Most patients feel immediate relief from back, neck and shoulder pain. There may be some light discomfort for a few days, but most patients are able to return to work the following week.
