Fine Needle Desiccation
Fine Needle desiccation is the destruction of certain skin lesions by using an electric current and microprobe in order to seal off the blood supply or remove the lesion altogether. It is well suited for those small skin lesions that are bothersome, like dilated pores, cherry angiomas, spider angiomas, ice pick scars, broken capillaries (telangiectasis), sebaceous hyperplasia, and skin tags. Most lesions require 1-3 treatments, with the exception of dilated pores and ice pick scars which may require 6 or more treatments. As many patients get more lesions over time, maintenance sessions may be necessary.
Avoid taking Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Alcohol, Vitamin E, or Fish oil 3 days prior to and following treatment in order to minimize bleeding and bruising. You may take Tylenol prior to appointment however to minimize discomfort. Depending on your skin type, you may be asked to pre-treat the skin for 2 weeks prior with a pigment stabilizing cream and for a few weeks after to avoid hyper-pigmenting (darkening) in the treated area.
After care consists of topical antibiotic ointment and not wearing makeup or using abrasive skin care products. Cold compresses will minimize swelling. To avoid complications, avoid sauna, steam room, hot tub/hot showers, sweating, exercising, and long-term daylight exposure and long-term daylight traveling for 3 days.
