Frequently Asked Questions
Prescriptive skin care products are intended to affect structure, form or function of the body and make a medical claim that requires approval and regulation by the FDA. Prescriptive skin care drugs require more stringent manufacturing standards and are issued under physician supervision for more individualized home care regimens. Cosmetic skin care products are intended to generally cleanse, beautify, and promote attractiveness, and may be used without physician supervision, without FDA investigation, and many have no safety or efficacy studies.
The concentrations of chemicals with proven performance and safety parameters are higher in prescription grade products. The same clinical technology is often applied to OTC skin care cosmetic products by utilizing a lesser concentration, and hence avoiding the FDA labelling and regulation required of drugs.
A kit of medical grade products is designed for the multiple components to work together for optimum results, for example, by increasing the absorption of active drugs. Randomized studies have shown in all types of skin that substituting OTC cleansers, moisturizers with sunscreens, with and without including prescription corrective products were less effective in correcting wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, laxity and sallowness than when the entire medical grade system was used alone. The use of OTC products provided inferior scar appearance when compared to scars treated with prescriptive skin care. Similarly, superior complementary benefits of medical grade products were seen after IPL treatments, dermal fillers, and toxin injections.
